Description
This class is about stories. The power of history and individuality. It’s about what makes up the fabric of our lives. It’s about what we celebrate and hold dear, what causes us pain and makes life challenging, what our priorities are, and the people and things that make our lives unique. It’s about history and legacy and truth-telling.
We clearly have stories to tell, but most of them are either trapped inside of us or living inside a tiny screen: pithy memes, curated 140 character statuses, Facebook and Instagram posts. Most of our photos are digital, too—and I can’t help but think that there is going to be a big, black hole where this generation’s stories should live. As we become more and more dependent on technology, we become less and less connected to the tangible. How often, in this modern day and age, do you make it a priority to sit knee-to-knee with another person and share what makes you YOU? How often do you print and touch actual photographs? If your stories only live on the internet, what will happen to them once you are gone?
I have been holding these spoons in my hands since I bought them. They are whispering to me. They are causing me to use my imagination. And, through my artistic process, I have begun binding my stories together with their stories. It’s been this beautiful give and take, an ebb and flow. Some of these spoons have been loved so hard that their finish is coming off. Some have beautiful and intricate designs. There are so many different sizes and shapes. Such varied tones and textures. They all have a story to tell. WE all have a story to tell.
I love the idea of the old being a foundation for the new. I love the idea of being truly curious about what came before us. I love the idea of leaving a rich and robust legacy, so that when our loved ones come upon our creations, they can’t help but sit a spell, drink in our stories, and allow their stories to interweave with our stories.
In this powerful and philosophical new women’s class from Self Esteem Through Art, we are going to explore ways to creatively tell our stories. We will dig deep into these modern lives of ours and extract the rich, archival goodness. We are going to act as artists, metaphorical archeologists, and family historians. We are going to be deliberate about curating our stories.
Each class will incorporate a robust combination of group discussions, some journaling and personal reflection, and the creation of awesome altered artwork! We are going to excavate, one spoon and story at a time, until we unearth what matters. We are going to use vintage spoons as our metaphorical measurement tool. And we will be using assorted mixed-media techniques and ephemera to decorate an assortment of them. We’ll be serving up something truly beautiful and meaningful during our time together!

- Footnote: People think art is a luxury, or a nice-to-have, or an only-for-the-select-few activity. People think you need a degree in order to be an “artist.” People think that creating art and taking the time to play is a waste of time. You would be wrong! Art is an unparalleled stress reliever, a phenomenal non-verbal communication tool, and a time-tested technique for processing emotions. I’ll see you in the studio!
